Mayor Kevin Kennedy has proclaimed April 13th as Joe McFarland day. Joe, who is now retiring after 19 years as the University of Michigan’s head coach is to be honored as North Olmsted’s most acclaimed and notable wrestler of all time.
He started his competitive career at St. Richard’s Grade School winning city titles for the Lions, then on to North Olmsted High School as a two-time State Champion for the Eagles, followed by being a four time All-American and two time national finalist for the University of Michigan Wolverines.
After college, Joe had a highly successful international career capped off by being a World Cup Champion in 1988 before becoming the University of Michigan’s 3rd All-Time most successful coach with 214 dual meet victories while coaching numerous Big Ten Champions and Collegiate All-Americans.
