Game Recap

The Eagles prevailed in a nail biter over the Berea-Midpark Titans, 41 to 40 to move on to play the Avon Eagles at Avon this coming Saturday night, March 4th at 7:00PM. The game started slowly as the Titans employed a 3-2 zone defense which slowed down play and scoring dramatically. The Eagles were able to control the boards and limit the Titans to 1 shot on each possession. They also caused some turnovers which led to run out baskets by Jack Kelly. The score through three quarters was 23 to 22 in favor of Berea-Midpark. After Josh Hufstetler scored the first points of the final quarter, Kevin Kidd got hot and scored the next 8 points to spark the Eagles to a 32-24 lead approximately 2 minutes into the fourth quarter. The Titans came back on baskets by Chad Elliott but the Eagles continued to drive the lane and get to the rim, drawing fouls which they converted into free throw points. They stubbornly held leads of 38 to 35 and 38 to 37 until the Titans went ahead 40 to 38 with 35 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, the Eagles worked for a good shot which did not fall, but the rebound was batted in the back court and recovered by the Eagles with 9 seconds left when they called time out to set up a last play. Josh Hufstetler received the inbound pass just inside the half court line and drove to the basket laying the tying points in with 5.5 seconds left and was fouled in the act. After a final time out by the Titans, he sank the “and 1” free throw to put the Eagles ahead 41 to 40. With the Titans having no time outs left, the Eagles put on a full court press to make them use valuable seconds in getting the ball in position for a last shot which fell off the rim for a well deserved Eagle victory. Josh Hufstetler had 15 points; Andy Bussman and Kevin Kidd each had 8 points; Jack Kelly scored 6 points; Rico Concepcion 3 points and Ben Bring 1 point. Congratulations on a hard fought tournament win!
